Healing Through Connection

Empowering You to Achieve Your Goals

Hello, I'm Dr. Kerry Klett.  I am a licensed clinical psychologist with over 30 years of experience working with people of all ages and all types of problems.  I have training and experience in both psychotherapy, or "talk therapy" and  brain-based therapies and use them together, based on the needs of the individual.

I have particular expertise helping those with complex PTSD, developmental trauma and anxiety, in its many forms.  The symptoms of c-PTSD and developmental trauma are many and diverse, some more obvious than others, often causing diffuse anxiety as well as the long list that follows: difficulty with transitions, sleep disturbances, complicated medical issues, back or neck pain, stomach issues, skin conditions, hair loss, headaches and other types of physical pain, loneliness, prolonged grief and sadness, panic attacks, phobias, nightmares and more.

In addition to the above, many people come to therapy for help with life transitions, such as adjustment to new parenthood, relationship loss, divorce, retirement or the death of a loved one.  Other common challenges these days include transitioning from student life to the “real world," or finding oneself a new empty-nester (wondering where the time went), or navigating the “sandwich years,” juggling the care of aging parents and growing children.  All can be difficult.  I know because I've been there.

If you choose to work with me, I will respect your unique needs, skills and desires to form an attuned, collaborative partnership with which we can navigate your life's challenges together.   Let me accompany you on your journey.  We will get farther traveling together.

The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.

Brain Based Therapies: Neurofeedback

Dr. Klett has years of training and experience using Neurofeedback to help people resolve their symptoms without the use of medications. NF is extremely useful in decreasing debilitating anxiety and depression, increasing focus and problem-solving abilities, and enhancing the individual’s sense of self and security in the world.

Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback in which the individual’s EEG waves are represented in pictures viewed on a computer screen. A protocol is designed, based on the individual’s goals and what their baseline EEG contains, and involves their continuous feedback to the clinician. NF uses the brain’s powerful capacity for self-healing to facilitate changes in emotional regulation and cognitive abilities. With a better balanced, more efficient brain the person becomes more effective and better attuned to their environment.

Deep Brain Reorienting

Deep Brain Reorienting

Developed by Dr. Frank Corrigan of Scotland, DBR (https://deepbrainreorienting.com/#about) is a highly effective trauma processing therapy. Similar but different from EMDR, DBR has been found to access and metabolize the painful incidents in a person’s past with very little talking.

Even early life events, which may be pre-verbal and unrecorded in episodic memory, can be healed with this powerful, yet gentle treatment. As we know, events stored in the body and deep brain can often be triggered by present day experiences, causing the person to stay stuck in a cycle of reliving rather than remembering or updating its information.

With DBR these incidents are accessed and processed without talking about them or revisiting the disturbing feelings they bring up. The disturbing cycle of trigger and fear or avoidance can be broken and the brain can update its understanding and experience of the world. As a result of treatment, clients have reported shifts in how they see themselves and others and are able to move through the world with increased self-compassion and reductions in trauma-related symptoms and reactions.

The Brain in Trauma

Trauma and adverse experiences are an assault on the sensory system and may cause long term disruptions in the brain’s capacity to understand the environment we live in. If the individual is missing or misperceiving important information from their senses, it becomes extremely difficult to make sense of their environment. As a result, one might feel safe in dangerous situations or be afraid in safe situations.

As the brain becomes calmer and better organized through NF and/or DBR, information can enter through the senses more accurately; our perceptions become more useful and we are able to act more effectively in the world. Another common outcome of both of these treatments is a deepening of the individual’s sense of self. The person may feel more consistency of self, new and deeper insights, and greater connection to the body. These achievements lead to increased feelings of efficacy and safety in the world.
